The book covers all bases of operating this type of business (and I mean "all!"). Amelia Painter, a B&B owner herself, provides the reader with a comprehensive hands-on instruction manual that is also easy to read and understand.
As a travel writer (www.bestromanticinns.com) and travel guidebook author of "Consummate Connecticut: Day Trips with Panache," I love to investigate all aspects of the travel business. Although I have no immediate plans to open and operate a B&B business (of course, who knows in the future?), I found Amelia's chapter on professional online marketing strategies a goldmine to help me promote my own business endeavors. Her expertise and refreshing writing style are well worth the price of the book. 』
(Opening and Operatling a Bed&Breakfast) 『This book is a great book if you are considering opening up a bed and breakfast. Amelia Painter has done an excellent job in presenting the do's and don't of starting a business like this. She also gives many pointers on how to run a successful business. On a scale of 1-5, I would give this book a 10. Great job Amelia.

(Strong on Internet Specifics but Weak on the rest) 『This book deals greatly (more than half the pages!) with internet marketing specifics and very little with the start-up and day to day specifics (in my opinion). I already own and operate two small businesses and was looking for something a bit more specific and meaty. This books seems geared more towards people who are merely "thinking" about a career move and less toward people who are ready to jump in. I recommend you look around more before buying.』
(awesome) 『We are opening a B and B in the spring and this was the best book ever. A must!!!!!!』
(Very informative and helpful.) 『I am considering operating a cabin for winter rentals in Big Bear, California. This book had useful tips and a great overview for how to get started. I especially appreciated the online marketing tips. Looking forward to a future edition to get into more detail about operating a B&B, or in my case, a cabin rental. Thanks.』 『Expanded and Revised Second Edition of a must have guidebook to success in the Bed and Breakfast Industry in the 21st Century. Great for aspiring, new or experienced innkeepers. This book covers innkeeping basics, but addresses the Internet topics in detail and helps the reader understand the steps necessary to successfully market a B&B on the Internet.』

IPhone 3G used's review (Great Intro to the experience of law school) 『I found this book an excellent introduction to what the experience of law school would be like-- from one student's perspective. It didn't have a great deal of practical advice on how to brief cases or outline classes, but it did provide me with a better sense of what to expect from the whole 3+ year process. For practical advice on briefing cases and studying suggestions, I found Law School Confidential much more useful. However, I think the two books complement each other. I enjoyed reading this book, and suspect I will reread sections as I move through law school.』
(The Best Book About Law School!!!) 『As a prospective law school applicant, who will be applying to a Juris Doctor program this year, I read a lot of books about law schools. Law School Insider by Jeremy Horwitz, Esq. (a cum laude graduate of Cornell Law School, who is currently working as an attorney) is by far the best book about a student's life before, during, and after law school. Unlike other books, this book is organized in a straight-forward manner and is well-written. It starts from the Introduction and Preparing for Law School Chapters that guide you through the entire admission process, from selecting a good law school to making educated choices after receiving acceptance letters. Thereafter, the author writes about the first year, memorable first-year summers, two-L, journal elections and intrigue, second-year summers, the third and final year, and the Bar exam. In addition, the book is supplemented by useful Tables on the first-year course schedules across the nation; modern law-related career options and elective specializations; state Bar exam subject matter coverage and MPRE requirements, to name a few. Various Appendixes include the sample writing completion submission and sample class outline excerpts.
Throughout the book, Jeremy offers a lot of valuable details about his personal experience as a law student in Cornell Law School. For example, he writes that his "...own first day of classes was only modestly intimidating. The readings had taken a long time, but were short enough that I though that I generally understood where they were going. Most of my professors initially came across as nice enough people, and the first class discussions about the readings were relatively gentle..." I found this to be similar to my own law school classes. In other chapters, he describes his experience of hunting for a job and compares different areas of practice and cities. No doubt, such details are extremely important. A few persons who posted their negative reviews about this book should have known that God is in details.
It is no secret that, due to the economic and other related factors, admission to any law school in the country (not to mention top law schools) has become extremely competitive during the recent years. LSAC offers the following nationwide statistics:
Law School Applications (Entering Class of Fall 2002) 89,000 applicants submitted over 440,000 applications. Average of approximately 5.3 applications per person; 17.4% increase in applications.
LSAT Test Takers (Entering class for Fall 2003) June 2002 LSAT: Largest June exam in history. 27,808 prospective applicants took the exam; 16.3% increase from June 2001 exam. October 2002: 52,604 persons took this exam; 12.5% increase over October 2001.
The bad news is, of course, that the competition to get into the law school of your choice is going to get even much tougher. But the good news is that after reading Law School Insider your chances of admission to your dream school will increase significantly. I strongly believe that this book is a must for any prospective law student. It is worth every penny, and I highly recommend it to anyone considering going to law school. Also, the Internet website created by Jeremy Horwitz, www.lawschoolinsider.com, is an excellent source for obtaining additional information about the complicated law school admission process, as well as for finding answers to your questions.
A short note about myself: I hold my first law degree from one of the best law schools in Europe, and an advanced Master of Laws degree from American law school (I wish I had read this book before I was applying to the LL.M. program!)』
(My favorite assigned pre-law book) 『I can see why this book was assigned reading for one of my college classes, it has been very helpful (and easy to read) in explaining what law school is really about, the careers I can pursue, and telling me what I need to do to prepare. Most of my books get sold at the end of the semester, but because this has so much information on how the first, second and third years of law school work (still 2 years away for me), I will keep this when I dump my other books. I have also found the web site (with free updates and discussion forums) for this book to be major bonuses.
BTW, it's funny to see how the "critics" behind the 1-star reviews here disagree about such ridiculous things. Is this book "mature"? "Humble?" Everyone who loves the book knows that it is both of these things, but even the "critics" can't seem to agree, probably because the "critics" are really jealous competing authors trying to take whatever shots they can to make people doubt a great book. Look past the 1-star smears and get this 5-star book!!』
(Thumb through at a bookstore first - you may save some $) 『I can't see why this book received such high marks from other readers. I found the author's perspective to be immature (e.g. bragging about parties), narrow (almost completely his own), and too general to be helpful.
The book would have been much improved if it was written several years after law school when the author had some career experience to reflect upon what he could have done better if he could do it over again. Instead it appears to have been published almost immediately after his graduation.
The book also could have been improved if multiple authors narrated their experiences. Instead, the book almost completely focuses on his. Thus, you're better off talking to some friends who have gone to law school, so that you can obtain multiple perspectives, than reading this book.
Finally, the book could have been improved with more facts. Such factual references would have been the appropriate way to utilize footnotes. Moreover, it would have given some legitimacy to his claims and advice. The appendices are one of the few places you can find useful facts, but they are too brief to justify the purchase.
My advice is to page through this book in-person first. It is nearly the equivalent of a self-published biography. It is not a useful guide to understanding law school. An undergraduate student may be fooled into thinking so, but anyone with a few years of career experience can see it for what it is. Just skim a few of its pages and the nearly useless footnotes (which yes he says you can skip at the beginning of the book) to save yourself some time and money better spent on other guides.
p.s. Contrary to another reviewer's speculation, I am not a competing author. I am an administrative code writer considering a career transition by going back to law school. If you are someone who could probably be defined as a non-trad student, I think you will share my opinion of this book.』
(Number One on My List of 3 Must-Have Books) 『A little about me: I'm now in my second year of law school and Purchased both Law School Insider and Law School Confidential last year. I wound up keeping only my copy of Law School Insider, which is a newer and more relevant book for me.
Now that I've completed my first year, I think that there are three books that every law student should read before (and maybe during) attending law school. The first two are Law School Insider and Getting to Maybe. Getting to Maybe is a good book on exams, and Law School Insider is the best book about the experience and how to prepare.
A little about law school: law school is a challenging LEARNING experience. If you want to be a lawyer, you go to law school to learn how to think, how to read, and how to manage your time. It is not just about getting good grades, it is about picking an area of personal specialization and actually learning. Only Law School Insider speaks to both the importance of grades and truly learning a specialty.
Besides the fact that Law School Insider is much more thorough, it is also a mature person's look at law school. Law School Confidential is peppered with exclamation marks (to make it seem more exciting!), formulas, way too many cocky, overconfident male perspectives, and handfuls of comments from all-white "mentors." I recognized these as gimmicks when I saw them but only realized how wrong and useless they were for me when I tried some of them.
By comparison, Law School Insider is a balanced book that actually speaks to the lifestyles and choices of different readers, including people who are married and worried about starting a life after law school, and tells people from diverse backgrounds how to maximize their chances of success. It has the most useful information, with none of Confidential's attitude. You can see that same attitude in the few absurdly negative reviews of Insider, but ignore it, it's just more Confidential hype without any substance.
On the subject of attitude, there is not a trace of arrogance or artificial stress anywhere in Insider. This contrasts sharply with Confidential, which suggests among other things that you should skip applying to law schools unless you're going to go someplace Robert Miller and his friends consider prestigious, and that law school is going to be like a war. Miller and I were both educated in Pennsylvania, but I know this stuff isn't even true at most of the schools in my state, let alone elsewhere in the country.
So what is the third book I would recommend if not Confidential? One-L. Confidential's perspective on law school is old and outdated too, but One-L is much more entertaining if you're buying a book about law School to be entertained. If you're looking to learn about law school life, you owe it to yourself to buy Law School Insider instead.』
『If you're looking for an easy-to-read, chronological guide to every step of the law school experience, this is the book you need. I find this book to be especially helpful in analyzing my dreams. Many words are in this book that I was not able to find in other books. I am enjoying it very much.』
(Best Dream Book So Far) 『This has so much useful information in it and I have had such fun deciphering my dreams. They also describe a useful method to use to figure them out. It's well worth the money.』
(Great as an introduction or supplemental to other dream dictionaries) 『I bought this book on a whim, loving the title. It's proved very valuable -- it makes it very easy to interpret a dream start to finish. By looking up the clear ideas and instructions at entries such as house, stairs, running, car, etc., you can piece together any objects and events in your dream. It doesn't contain *everything* -- like another reviewer I'd say it would be perfect paired with a 'more traditional' dream dictionary, which is the exact stated purpose of the book, but I've done just fine with this alone for several years. Her first chapter listing basic dream types and how to process them is a little bit oversimple -- the examples themselves aren't a full explanation -- but it's a useful bonus in a book whose stated goal is to be a dictionary. I never interpreted my own dreams before but have gotten better and better at it using only this book. I've also found that the process of looking up information about my dreams has helped me remember them better as time goes on. I also like her clear, to-the-point, direct address style of writing. Fun, easy, and informative, and it's led to some real personal growth as well!』
(I prefer hokus pokus!) 『This book deals a little too much with feelings and I think that makes it a bit boring. Me, I prefer the more enchanting books that do tell you of upcoming events! This is probably more accurate, though, but still. :)
It's an okay book and definately a must have because if you're into dream books/dictionaries you do need more than one reference! It's a nice addition!
I think that if this book merged with a more traditional one they would make a more complete reference.』
(The BEST dream book ever!!!!!) 『WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always loved dream books but never felt fully satisfied... until now. I have been waiting for a dream book like this since I was old enough to interpret my dreams. I used to go over 3 or 4 different dream books to decipher my dreams but I finally only need one. Somehow Kelly managed to be the first person in the universe to make a genius book that covers everything in one place.』 『DESCRIPTION: We live in a world of sensory overload, and people's dreams have come to reflect that complexity. No longer do people dream that they are standing naked in a room full of their peers. I HAD THE STRANGEST DREAM... will answer such questions and help readers break down the meaning of their dreams. 21st century dreamers will finally have the tools they need to tap into the power of their dreams in order to become more productive and tranquil human beings.』
IPhone 3G used's review (NLP Like it Never Was) 『The subtitle to this book - on the front cover but not on the title page - is "A COMPLETE INTRODUCTION AND TRAINING PROGRAMME". But what is a "complete introduction" to NLP? In their book 'Introducing NLP', authors O'Connor and Seymour give what they describe as a 'Three Minute Seminar' on NLP. That might equally qualify as a "complete introduction" to NLP, depending on your interpretation of the words "complete" and "introduction". And does the word "complete" apply to "introduction" only, or to the rest of the subtitle? In either case I'd seriously question its accuracy.
And what about the claim, in the Foreward, that:
"[the authors] have synthesised the NLP practitioner information and brought a new clarity to the field. ... While Harry and Beryl are not the developers of NLP, they play a critical role in moving NLP to the next level."
It turns out that all this comment means is: "The authors got an NLP book published by a mainstream publisher." Yes they did, but rather a long time (several years) after O'Connor and Seymour, so hardly a "critical role".
This book is, in fact, a rather verbose and not particularly competent introduction to the SOME of the basics of NLP. A "training programme" it is NOT, for the same reason that no book is a training programme - human beings learn very little just by reading about it. Especially in this particular field of activity.
I personally found the writing uninspired, conveying nothing of the 'magic' of NLP. Moreover, having decided to write the whole book in E-Prime (a fad if ever there was one!) the authors trap themselves in the kind of sentence construction that NLP highlights as being the basis of poor communication. For example, what did the authors mean by this statement:
"Our personal mind programmes (sic) constitute the 'map'. They include so-called 'meta programmes' (sic), our higher-level thinking patterns such as our values, beliefs and other personality traits."
Is that supposed to mean that our "personal mind programmes" include meta programs AND our "higher-level thinking patterns"; or does it mean that " 'meta programmes' (sic)" ARE "higher-level thinking patterns"? And why is 'meta programs' spelt 'meta programmes'? Are the authors not aware that the 'program' in 'meta program' is adopted from computing terminology?
We also need to ask why the authors refer to them as "so-called 'meta programmes'(sic)"? Do they mean that meta programs aren't really meta programs in some sense? And is that why meta programs are almost totally ignored in this allegedly "complete introduction"?
Indeed, the more I read of this book, the more I wondered if the authors really knew what they were writing about. For example, there are several references (more than the 6 referenced in the Index) to left and right brain activity, such as:
"This calls upon natural, 'right brain' intuitive skills ..."
Surely this myth of exclusivity in left and right brain activities was laid to rest years ago?
"Neuro-Linguistic Programming builds on the ideas of the anthropologist Gregory Bateson."
What - the whole of NLP? What about Satir, Erickson, Korzybski, Perls, etc., etc.?
The notion that "Auditory Digital" is a representational system in its own right, but apparently taste (gustatory) and smell (olfactory) no longer qualify. Thus the original list of representational systems - visual, auditory, kinesthetic, Olfactory and Gustatory (VAKOG) - has been transformed, with no explanation, into VAKAd!
Then there is the very confused section on 'Switching Submodalities' where the authors quite rightly observe that:
"Association tends to intensify a feeling. Conversely, recalling a traumatic experience in a dissociated way will typically cause less pain ..."
but only after they have recommended that the reader switch to the associated state when recalling an unhappy memory in order to apply "the 'happiness code' to the content. Such switching may work well under the direction of an experienced guide, but I seriously doubt the wisdom of recommending this course of action to a complete beginner.
And why does the discussion of The Convincer Strategy (day 17) cover convincer modes (what kind of evidence is convincing) but not convincer channels (how frequently or for how long the evidence must be encountered to become convincing)?
Returning to Bateson, on page 197 the authors state that "the anthropologist Gregory Bateson originated a model of neurological levels, later developed by Robert Dilts as shown in figure 14.1."
Not actually true, I'm afraid, for the following reasons:
Bateson invented a model of "logical levels of learning - which had to do with levels of abstraction (learning, learning about learning, learning about learning about learning, and so on) - which has nothing to do with neurological levels. On the contrary, where Bateson's model is both logical and about "levels", the Dilts model isn't logical, and doesn't feature any true "levels".
Moreover, the illustration in figure 14.1 isn't the Neurological Levels model at all, though the authors keep calling it that. It is, in fact, just the plain Logical Levels model, a fact that is easily verified since the illustration doesn't include a single one of the 'nervous system' labels that are in Dilts' Neurological Levels model.
Having said all that, its only fair to mention that there are several passages in the text which must stand out as worthwhile in anybody's book (!). I'm particularly thinking of the section entitled 'Soft Front Ends', which gives some very useful advice on how to ask meta model questions with sensitivity; of the exercises at the end of the chapter on metaphors; and of 'ALIGNMENT', a section which demonstrates how to apply the idea of neurological levels to real life situations.
Unfortunately, for the reasons stated above I really wouldn't be happy about recommending this book to a complete novice. And unless you are a complete novice I can't see any reason to read something this basic. Especially when you consider that O'Connor and Seymour's 'Introducing NLP' is more accurate, more complete, and cheaper! In short, definitely 'Not Recommended'.』

I should know because I already have an MBA. I could not get through more than two pages before nodding off. My eyes burned from trying to read through reverse print/images from the back of a page in what couldn't be much larger than 6 point type on gray pages! The book is printed on paper stock on par with your typical trashy Hollywood celebrity magazine. Be careful flipping pages, you might rip them. When I tried to highlight passages, it bled through to the next page! My suggestion is to skim the chapter summaries, go back and read the section(s) you need more detail on and save your eyes.
The book came with a card to access online resources. Despite my book being brand new and still shrink wrapped, an error message popped up when I tried to register, stating that the access code was no longer valid or had been used previously. (It's an Excellent Time for New Ventures) 『If you look around at the big businesses of today, most of them weren't around a hundred years ago. This includes not only the really new companies like Microsoft and Intel, but also the oil companies, automobile companies, airlines and more.
A hundred years from now it will be the same thing. The days of cheap energy are over, global warming is coming, and the recent developments in biotechnology are opening new doors. In the next century there will be an awful lot of room for new companies that work in such areas to solve tomorrow's problems. And often the big companies of today can't make the transition.
This book is sort of the general overall Bible of starting a new company. It is intended for use by individuals and by business school students thinking of starting a company.
It begins with a look at the entrepreneurial mind. This examines the the attitudes, habits and behaviors seen in successful entrepreneurs. It continues through every step in the process until you've cashed out and are looking for ways to spend your fortune.
Having worked for several entrepreneurs and see what happens, this book would have saved some of them an awful lot of effort.』
(Earlier versions are better) 『This book includes numerous tear-out exercises and cases. It might be appropriate for a classroom but it is not ideal for prospective entrepreneurs.
Earlier versions of this book had good material on writing a business plan and determining appropriate sources of capital and less extraneous fillers.
