(Simply Excellent!) 『This book is volume one out of three. The book covers the history of JG53 from the formation of the Luftwaffe through to operations in the Mediterranean againsn't Malta. Included are Sitzkreig, the French campaign, Battle of Britain and the invasion and advance into Russia.
Prien gives daily accounts of operations by JG53, including diary extracts and combat reports from some of the pilots. This along with the lavish use of photographs, recreates the reality and feel of what it must of been like fly and fight for the Luftwaffe. At the end of each chapter Prien gives a grim detailed tally of JG53's losses.( I would like to have seen the same detailed tally on its victories as well.) JG53 was probably a good choice to research and write about for although it didnt have many of the well known aces and personalities like other Jagdeschwader, it fought in practically every theatre of the war.
Prein also is able to give quick, accurate summaries of overall military situations which I found excellent and refreshing.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend to anyone with an interest in WW2 aviation and the Luftwaffe although some may find it a little expensive. Some will be pleasantly surprised at the colour photograghs at the end of the book. I look forward to obtaining the next two volumes.』

IPhone 3G used's review (Information very general. Does not include tune-up info.) 『Does not include specific information. I.E. Book only displays one type of distributer (not mine) in their example. Chilton's usually has better info than this -- this book, however, isn't one of them. Doesn't give enough information to do a proper tune-up other than point and plug gaps. It is a good resource to have on hand in conjunction with another manual. Do not start a restoration job with this manual alone!!』
(Great book for the Classic owner) 『Way more than I expected. Anyone with any mechanical knowledge should own this book to make repairs on their classic car.』
(lack-lustre low-detail high-priced book.) 『I bought this book for assistance with the flathead ford V-8 and low and behold it was no help at all. the directions were poor and the content was terrible. If you want to buy a book for a car go to a dealership, get a factory manual. And don't buy it if you live in Canada, altogether it cost me $60!!!』 『Chilton's Hard-Cover Reference Manuals are perfect for enthusiasts of vintage and rare cars. Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (The courtroom artist whose sketches speak as loudly as a camera) 『Andy Austin is a chic woman who has been a Chicago courtroom sketch artist for 40 years. Her memoir is called RULE 53; the title refers to a federal statute that prohibits photography in courtrooms. Hence the role of sketch artists, who work with newspapers and TV stations to provide the public with not just the faces of specific participants, but the emotional essence of key moments as trials unfold. In court, Austin works in a style that might be called "disciplined sketchiness." She's very skilled at delineating character, particularly as expressed in her subjects' eyes. Over the years she's worked on a lot of high-profile trials: Bobby Seale, Abbie Hoffman, Tom Hayden and the rest of the Chicago 8/Chicago 7; disgraced Illinois governor Otto Kerner; inept American spy William Kampiles; conspiracy&murder proceedings against gangs as varied as the Mob and the El Rukns; arrogantly corrupt judge Thomas Maloney; and, most famously, perhaps, suburban serial killer John Wayne Gacy. As anticipated, Austin provides an ongoing primer on the responsibilities of courtroom artists. The job is a demanding and challenging one that must be performed well under ceaseless pressure. This aspect of the memoir is interesting and frequently dramatic, but the most profound pleasure is the sharp insight of Austin's prose. When describing a well-connected state senator named John D'Arco, Austin writes, "I was struck by how small and neat he was, like a well-designed pocketknife." She remembers that one witness at a Mob trial "came limping in on a cane. Hunched over in rumpled, pale silk clothes, hair parted in the middle like a 1920s movie star, he could have been a burnt-out playboy, someone you might see hobbling along the boardwalk at a second-rate European spa. He had an out-of-season look about him." Later, Austin describes "Toomba," an El Rukn member she'd sketched earlier, as now appearing "sleeker and more satanic. It wasn't just that he was dressed in black; it was because he wasn't wearing the big round glasses that had made him look like a schoolteacher. . . . now that I could see his eyes, he seemed more truly mad." And when recalling Bob McGee, a co-defendant in the Maloney case, Austin says that the man "looked worse than ever. Even his nose looked guilty. He kept trying to arrange his features in a neutral configuration and only made them worse." By any standard, this is sharp, incisive writing. The various picture and word portraits of Austin's subjects come together in a mosaic of courtroom procedure as it's carried out in Chicago, a city that punishes wrongdoing as vigorously as it sometimes rewards it. We come away with useful impressions of the roles of DAs and defense attorneys; judges and bailiffs; defendants and the aged "court buffs" who spend their days in the observers' sections, soaking up every detail and passing skewed judgment on participants who impress or disappoint them. The criminal justice system is complex, even baroque, but at the heart of it are real people who, knowingly or unwittingly, have revealed themselves to Austin's scrutiny. She misses very little.』
(Rule 53) 『Andy Austin's Rule 53 is a gem. From her unique vantage point as an on-the-scene witness to a series of Chicago's gaudiest criminal trials since 1969, Austin's book offers the reader a dazzling panoramic history of the dark side of this great city's recent history. Her day job as an artist for a television station was to swiftly capture the amazing assortment of audacious trouble makers, crooked politicians, deranged murderers, dangerous spies, white collar criminals and violent gang members --white and black --who were brought into the the courts of Chicago. But her "night" job, it turns out, was to thoughtfully and elegantly reflect on the fascinating mindsets of all those who in one way or another were key players in these always dramatic trials -- the criminals, the prosecutors, the defense attorneys and the judges. Austin more than accompished her mission.』
(Great insight into Chicago and the US justice system) 『Andy Austin takes us on a riveting ride through 30 years of the Chicago underworld as seen from her perch right next to them as defendants--drawing their portraits for TV use in covering their trials. [[ASIN:1893121534 Rule 53: Capturing Hippies, Spies, Politicians, and Murderers in an American Courtroom] It brings back the Chicago 7, assorted Mafia figures and the street gang leaders who transformed the city: she shows them all in her sketches in prose as well as in drawings. A fast and funny and appalling story, great for anyone interested in Chicago and the way the US justice system works and doesn't work.』
(The 1960s were a turbulent time in America, with controversy around every corner.) 『The 1960s were a turbulent time in America, with controversy around every corner. "Rule 53: Capturing Hippies, Spies, Politicians, and Murderers in an American Courtroom" is a new perspective on the decade through the eyes of a courtroom sketch artist. The author saw countless pivotal cases and strange characters from all walks of life in an era when people began to stand up and speak out for their rights. Refreshing, charming, and packed with sketches from over the years, "Rule 53: Capturing Hippies, Spies, Politicians, and Murderers in an American Courtroom" is a top pick for community library memoir and art collections.

(Great Read!!) 『This is a fascinating picture of the underworld scene through the years from a unique perspective - a court room artist of great ability both as an artist and writer. It is a great read whether you are acquainted with the goings-on of the Chicago mob or not. The text is erudite and knowledgeable and the artistry fine, indeed. Run; don't walk, to find a copy』 『No Cameras Allowed
In the late 1960s, new to Chicago and bored with the still life subjects she painted in her home studio, artist Andy Austin began wandering the city in search of surprises from life as it is really lived. Chicago delivered--with the color and drama of volatile times and larger-than-life subjects. The streets were alive with noisy demonstrations, against the war in Vietnam, and in support of issues ranging from civil rights to raises for schoolteachers. Austin sketched picket lines and protests and sometimes joined them, soaking up every detail with crystalline clarity. When she turned her skills to court drawing, her stunning ability to capture pivotal moments and revealing human interactions gave Chicagoans an unparalleled you-are-there view of trials and personalities that made headlines.
Rule 53: Capturing Hippies, Spies, Politicians, and Murderers in an American Courtroomis a vivid memoir by one of the country's best visual chroniclers of courtroom proceedings. Austin's gift for seeing essential details offers intimate glimpses of defendants like the Chicago 7 radicals, the Black Panthers and the El Rukns, serial killer John Wayne Gacy, and a parade of mobsters. In prose as deft and insightful as her sketches, she shares her portraits of the lawyers, judges, politicians, and others involved in cases she observed, salutes friends and colleagues, and shares personal experiences that influenced her unique perspective on local history in the making.
Andy Austin does a remarkable job as a Chicago courtroom artist, and in her book, the truth comes through as vividly as in her sketches.
--Studs Terkel, author and oral historian
I like Andy Austin's quick mind and quick eye. She sees the drama, the humanity and, yes, even the humor in Chicago's greatest theater--its courtrooms. Her memoirs, beautifully illustrated, provide an amazing look at the inner workings of America's most ebullient city.
IPhone 3G used's review (A good documentation complement but well overpriced.) 『After three years of hesitation - due to the excessive price - I came to the conclusion that this book should be part of my Indian documentation. It provides good information on most models of the period covered, in a context carefully described by Hatfield in his introduction pages. These are useful reminders of how pre-production pictures and factory sales brochures should be taken in general: with caution! J. Hatfield seems to overcome this well by crossing his info with other sources, be it testimonies from ex-Indian employees or workshop manuals. This validation work is of big value, as it will not be replicated any time soon for sure. Owners of original Indian motorcycles can certainly benefit from this book, but let's face it... Unless you own a full collection or are a professional restorer, only a couple of pages will be of true value to you. And for some models, this is pretty thin. At more than US$200, it is hard to justify. If you are not actively involved in a restoration project, you may just pass and focus on a more general Indian book from Hatfield. If you are planning an A to Z restoration, it remains a good documentation add-on that could in the end save you some project money. All in all, the high price tag completely kills the book by creating too high expectations. Based on my reading experience, "Indian Chief Motorcycles 1922-1953" book - also from Hatfield - is a better choice and more valuable option.』
(New printing available) 『I saw it at Davenport, Starklite or Kiwi or one of the other big boys was selling it for $50. If you need to spend $500 on it, just send the extra $450 to me.』
(New Printing Coming w/Updates) 『Learned recently that Jerry Hatfield had requested a new printing of this book be done, and apparently if this hasn't taken place within 6 months then the rights to print revert back to him. Plans are that if (when) that printing doesn't occur and he's got the rights back, then he'll have the book printed with 30 or so pages of updates. Hold out for that copy if you can as it will correct some discrepancies that are printed in the original book. :)

09/06/08 Interesting that last week's update to my original review wasn't published by Amazon. Probably because I mention that the recently updated version of this title isn't available through them- but it is currently available through Starklite. (Beautiful Bikes) 『I have been into Indian motorcycles since I was a kid. One of the lucky ones-my dad held on to his. I have run into so many people like the person selling this book @$450. Whatever happened to trying to keep the spirit alive? These old bikes are becoming fewer and fewer. We should work together to preserve the declining number. I would like to know who this person is and black list them from all Antique motorcycle clubs and events!』
(the price is too high) 『I have watched these books go up since a year or so ago. I debated at $150 for this book last year. Looking back i guess I should have invested and tried to gouge someone else like the seller here is ($450) I am currently seeking this book as a reference for my restoration. If I get one I will sell it (with no gouging) to another person who is ready to put the book to use!
IPhone 3G used's review (Excellent image bank from WWII Luftwaffe.) 『Excellent book. As its own title names: "A Chronicle in Photographs", this publication was not edited to be a technical book but work as an "image bank". The Volume 2 is a continuation of the first Volume, and covers the JGs 53, 54, 77, 300, 301, 302 and 400, plus several profiles with camouflage patterns and a complete Victory List of Luftwaffe pilots which respective rank and awards (this List was not published in the volume 1). As also occurred in the Volume 1, the major photographs were unpublished and of high quality. The color section features 15 good quality original WWII color photographs, including an excellent full page size image from Hans Philipp in front of his Bf 109 (this makes a good reference for both modelers and uniforms collectors). It is, without doubt, a very desirable publication and I strong recommend both Volumes to every Luftwaffe enthusiast.』 『Volume II covers: JG 53 Pik-As, JG 54 Grünherz, JG 77 Herz-As, JG 300, JG 301, JG 302 Wilde Sau, and JG 400.』
