(Three Laws of Performance)
『Going through the book there were points of discussion and even actions to take. While I had some discussions and a few actions I didn't really do the work called for. However my performance and results have taken off. This is the way I like it.』

(Changed my outlook before even finishing the book)
『You have a loop playing in your head. A little voice, perhaps the one saying "what voice?" right now. Among the many amazing tools outlined in this book, the skill for changing that loop was for me the most profound. How a situation occurs to you makes all the difference, and The Three Laws goes into meticulous detail as to how that happens. Transformation is a vague concept if you have not experienced it, much like riding a bike. But once you get it, you get it. It's not metaphysical or mysterious; it just requires the willingness to look unflinchingly into your own circumstances. So let me add my voice to the chorus of those who say that this book made a big difference in my life.』

(Brings back good memories of the seminar)
『I attended the seminar put on by Mr Zaffron and his colleagues. That was a 4-day, 10-hr day seminar. Lots of notes. The book offers a great summary of that experience. I'm not a guru in this area, but the process seems to be cogent. The key is in the application. The book (and the seminar) offer good, clear guidance on ways to meet that ends. For me, I was reminded that leadership starts with personal leadership. Oh what a world it would be if we would each apply that concept ... starting with myself, of course.』

(3 Laws of Performance)
『Absolutely fantastic book. Really opens up a whole new avenue and explains the reasons why conventional strategies don't work. Highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to create a new future for themselves or for their company.』

(Not Kidding Around)
『This book was such a pleasant surprise. I knew if it came from Steve Zaffron and Vanto -- it was going to be good, but I sure didn't expect to be blown away.

I've never seen such a book that was so casually powerful.

You don't just want to read this for business, but for life.

Kirk Keeter』

『When a hurricane warning is announced, everyone's concerns and actions become focused on that expectation; the hurricane essentially becomes the future which people are "living into." Similarly, when an organization needs to transform or make the leap to a higher level, everyone involved should be "living into" the vision of the organization's new, improved future. But in the majority of organizations, the future people are living into is based on past performance and experience, and so major transformation is almost impossible.

Steve Zaffron is, CEO of Vanto Group which has helped hundreds of companies envision and effectively implement major change and performance improvement. Zaffron and Dave Logan outline this proven system for rallying all of an organization's employees around a new vision, and more importantly, making it stick. Their focus is on making such transformations permanent and repeatable, providing practical examples from Vanto Group’s clients such as Apple, Lockheed Martin, Reebok, BHP-Billiton, Johnson&Johnson, Morgan Stanley, and many others.』

(Now I Understand Why I Was So Miseable)
『I came across this book yesterday while killing some time in the book store. I purchased it on my Kindle that afternoon and just completed it. I actually gave notice at my job less than a week ago after 3 1/2 years. I was well-compensated but absolutely miserable. I had a difficult time explaining to my husband and my friends why I was so miserable but this book explains it perfectly. I've worked for great managers in the past and, more recently, some very ineffective managers. It makes all the difference in the world. I plan to purchase a few copies and distribute them on my way out. I also plan to read Lencioni's other books before I begin my search for my next position.』

(Good Fable that Provokes Thought)
『This book was a quick read that provokes thought. A miserable job isn't necessarily the one that has bad hours or low pay. Lencioni identifies anonymity (no one knows the employee personally), irrelevance (the employee feels work benefits no one), and immeasurability (the employee has no way to know/measure how he is performing). The book encourages managers to get to know their employees on a more personal level and help the employees understand who benefits from their work. These "touchy-feely" ways help employees feel more connected to the job and to co-workers. Certainly worth reading - especially if you put aside skepticism and give his ideas a try.』

(Hey, it's (mostly) in English!)
『I'd like to start off by mentioning that "immeasurement" is not a word. If this author is going to write on a subject that has to do with the business environment in the United States, why does he need to make up words? This is just silly and sets the tone for the rest of the book.

The people that have read this book and really take something away from it must have been exceptionally poor managers or exceptionally simple workers. If you're really interested in why your employees are upset, put the book down, walk over to them and ask them.

Perhaps the employees should realize that they are provided a metric for their performance when they receive their paycheck. Maybe we are supposed to be anonymous. I don't always want to be seen at work. I'm busy and this isn't a social club. Your job is not always the best venue to feel important or relevant.

America, please stop being such a bunch of hippies in group therapy sessions, sharing and caring. Do your job, get your money and go home. Seek validation elsewhere if you need it.

I gave the book two stars because there's always the one moron in management that's at the bottom of the barrel, who could learn something from this book.』

(Job dissatisfaction - erodes lives and hurts productivity. But, something can be done.)
『A common theory to job satisfaction says that it is all about finding the "right job" that consists of interesting work and pays well. But, Lencioni elaborates: "My theory about job satisfaction was eroding quickly, especially as I met more and more people with supposedly great jobs who, like me, dreaded going to work. These were engineers and executives and teachers, highly educated people who carefully chose their careers based on their true passions and interests. And yet they were undoubtedly miserable. The theory crumbled completely when I came across other people with less obviously attractive jobs who seemed to find fulfillment in their work - gardeners and waitresses and hotel housekeepers." (pg. ix). Job dissatisfaction causes lots of human misery (from being more cynical, unhappy, and frustrated, to eroding passion, and affecting spouses and whole families. But, also it can have more drastic effects such as leading to serious depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and even violence at work or home. Beyond the human misery, the impact on the organization is undeniably huge. Although difficult to quantify, employee dissatisfaction has deep impact on productivity, turnover, and morale, all of which hit the company's bottom line (pg. x). Lencioni is confident that the remedy is available, it is barely being used, perhaps because it is simple and obvious. Quoting Samuel Johnson: "People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed." (pg. x).

The story begins with Brian who was a successful CEO of a large company, and now just going into retirement. Being better off financially than ever in his life, he is considering how to fill his days. We hear about Brian's humble beginnings, modest educational background (college drop-out), but having a strong work ethic and desire to learn, slowly advancing and getting promoted, to eventually become the CEO of the company. Not atypical for America, I personally know people like that! While at a first site, retiring at a nice little mountain home may seem wonderful, it can also be aimless and unfulfilling. So, Brian finds something to do and along the way teaches the reader something about job satisfaction (something that he had also dealt with at his old company). So, the story goes on.

The 3 signs are: (1) anonymity - cannot be fulfilled at your work if you are not known and appreciated for your unique qualities (or gifts) by someone in authority; (2) irrelevance - people need to know that their job matters to someone; (3) immeasurement - everyone needs to be able to gauge their progress and level of contribution, rather than relying on the opinions or whims of another person, tangible means for assessing success or failure. Maybe you see these as obvious, but how they play out in regular day work environment, and how to correct the situation is not necessarily obvious. At the end of the book, Lencioni has few chapters directed at analyzing in more depth the causes of misery and how to address them, the obstacles that employees face, the ones that managers face, as well as adding few additional and small case studies. Easy to read and highly rewarding for anybody who works in any environment.

If you work in a Christian ministry or you are a Christian, you can consider this story as a modern day parable. Though secular, the principles are Biblically sound: anonymity = we all want to be recognized as uniquely created by God, irrelevance = we want to have meaning to our life and work, immeasurement = we will not be satisfied if we cannot show fruits to our labor, fruits of our repentance from our sins (precondition to being saved). The Bible says that we ought to work in everything as working for the Lord, very consistent with the message of this book, both for managers and employees.

(Make sure the job you get doesn't include these signs!)
『`The Three Signs of a Miserable Job' tells the intriguing fable of Brian Bailey. Brian is a successful manager and CEO, without a college degree, who converts his miserable employees into happy ones. We follow his struggles and highs and learn how humanity can lead to great business success.

Anyone who can relate to being miserably employed will benefit from the inspired solutions within this book. Patrick M. Lencioni shares his approach to making work rewarding and meaningful. Irrelevance, immeasurability, and anonymity are the three key characteristics of a miserable job and Lencioni gives us the key to turning things around.

He inspires us to actually want to get out of bed and head to work in the morning! For anyone stuck in a miserable workplace with no hope we learn that there is hope, that happy workplaces exist and just how to recognize them.

This is a useful read for both managers seeking to make their employees jobs more fulfilling and job seekers looking to recognize the kind of work place they should be seeking out.

『A bestselling author and business guru tells how to improve your job satisfaction and performance.

In his sixth fable, bestselling author Patrick Lencioni takes on a topic that almost everyone can relate to: the causes of a miserable job. Millions of workers, even those who have carefully chosen careers based on true passions and interests, dread going to work, suffering each day as they trudge to jobs that make them cynical, weary, and frustrated. It is a simple fact of business life that any job, from investment banker to dishwasher, can become miserable. Through the story of a CEO turned pizzeria manager, Lencioni reveals the three elements that make work miserable -- irrelevance, immeasurability, and anonymity -- and gives managers and their employees the keys to make any job more fulfilling.

As with all of Lencioni’s books, this one is filled with actionable advice you can put into effect immediately. In addition to the fable, the book includes a detailed model examining the three signs of job misery and how they can be remedied. It covers the benefits of managing for job fulfillment within organizations --increased productivity, greater retention, and competitive advantage -- and offers examples of how managers can use the applications in the book to deal with specific jobs and situations.

Patrick Lencioni (San Francisco, CA) is President of The Table Group, a management consulting firm specializing in executive team development and organizational health. As a consultant and keynote speaker, he has worked with thousands of senior executives and executive teams in organizations ranging from Fortune 500 companies to high-tech startups to universities and nonprofits. His clients include AT&T, Bechtel, Boeing, Cisco, Sam’s Club, Microsoft, Mitsubishi, Allstate, Visa, FedEx, New York Life, Sprint, Novell, Sybase, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Lencioni is the author of six bestselling books, including The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. He previously worked for Oracle, Sybase, and the management consulting firm Bain&Company.』
『Patrick Lencioni, renowned business consultant and bestselling author ofThe Five Dysfunctions of a Team, is on a critical mission: create widespread job satisfaction in a world full of workplace misery. His latest book,The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers (And Their Employees), tells the inspiring tale a high-flying, but deeply dissatisfied Chief Executive Officer who ditches the power and perks for career bliss as the manager of a pizzeria! In this unusual and inspiring story, Lencioni convincingly demonstrates how career happiness (or misery) is the direct result of the manager--employee relationship. Patrick Lencioni took the time to tell us about his life-long "obsession" with job misery, shatter some myths about workplace satisfaction and offer some real advice on how to turn that daily grind into daily fulfillment.--Lauren Nemroff

Some Questions for Patrick Lencioni

Q: Why did you decide to write this book?

A:As a kid, I watched my dad trudge off to work each day and became somewhat obsessed with the notion of job misery. Somewhere along the line, I came to the frightening realization that people spend so much time at work yet so many of them were unfulfilled and frustrated in their jobs. As I got older, I came to another realization--that job misery was having a devastating impact on individuals, and on society at large. It seemed to me that understanding the cause of the problem, and finding a solution for it, was a worthy focus for my career.

Q: What exactly is a miserable job?

A:A miserable job is not the same as a bad one. A bad job lies in the eye of the beholder. One person’s dream job might be another person’s nightmare. But a miserable job is universal. It is one that makes a person cynical and frustrated and demoralized when they go home at night. It drains them of their energy, their enthusiasm and their self-esteem. Miserable jobs can be found in every industry and at every level. Professional athletes, CEOs and actors can be--and often are-- as miserable as ditch diggers, janitors and fast food workers.

Q: How prevalent is job misery?

A:Attend any kind of social gathering, anywhere in the country, and talk about work. The stories and anecdotal evidence confirming job misery are overwhelming. Misery spans all income levels, ages and geography. A recent Gallup poll found that 77% of people hate their jobs. Gallup also contends that this ailing workforce is costing employers more than $350 billion dollars in lost productivity.

Q: What is the root cause of job misery?

A:The primary source of job misery and the potential cure for that misery resides in the hands of one individual--the direct manager. There are countless studies confirming this statement, including both Gallup and The Blanchard Companies. Both organizations have found that an employee’s relationship with their direct manager is the most important determinant to employee satisfaction (over pay, benefits, perks, work-life balance etc).

Even employees who are well paid, do interesting work and have great autonomy, cannot feel fulfilled in a job if their managers are not providing them with what they need on a daily or weekly basis.

Q: What are the three signs?

The first is anonymity, which is the feeling that employees get when they realize that their manager has little interest in them a human being and that they know little about their lives, their aspirations and their interests.

The second sign is irrelevance, which takes root when employees cannot see how their job makes a difference in the lives of others. Every employee needs to know that the work they do impacts someone’s life--a customer, a co-worker, even a supervisor--in one way or another.

The third sign is something I call "immeasurement," which is the inability of employees to assess for themselves their contribution or success. Employees who have no means of measuring how well they are doing on a given day or in a given week, must rely on the subjective opinions of others, usually their managers’, to gauge their progress or contribution.

Q: Why don’t managers do these things?

A:As simple as the three signs are, the fact remains that few managers take a genuine interest in their people, remind them of the impact that their work has on others, and help them establish creative ways to measure and assess their performance.

There are a number of reasons. First, many managers think they are too busy. Of course, the real problem is that most of those managers see themselves primarily as individual contributors who happen to have direct reports. They fail to realize that the most important part of their jobs is providing their people with what they need to be productive and fulfilled (a.k.a. not miserable) in their jobs.

The second reason that managers don’t provide their employees with the three things they need is that they simply forget what is was like when they were a little lower on the food chain. They somehow forget how important it was to them when a supervisor took an interest in them, talked to them about why their work really matteredand gave them a means for evaluating their progress.

Finally, many managers don’t do this because they are embarrassed or afraid to try. They fear that their employees will see them as being disingenuous or manipulative, or that by taking an interest in their personal lives they will be stepping into inappropriate territory. It’s almost as though they fail to understandthe difference between the interview process (no personal questions allowed!) and the actual work experience (treat people like a full human being).

Q: What can a miserable employee do to improve his or her situation?

A:The first thing they can do is assess whether their manager is interested in and capable of addressing the three things that are required. And they have to realize that most managers really do want to improve, in spite of the fact that they may seem disinterested.

The second thing miserable employees need to do is help their managers understand what it is they need. If they have a strong relationship with their manager, they can come right out and say it ("You know, it would mean a lot to me if you knew more about who I am and what makes me tick." or, "Can you sit down and help me understand why this work I’m doing makes a difference to someone?").

Finally, employees would do well for themselves if they turned the tables and started doing for their managers what they want for themselves. For instance, employees who take a greater interest in the life of their managers are bound to infect them with the same kind of human interest. Similarly, employees who take the time to tell their managers (in a non suck-up kind of way) about the impact they have on their job satisfaction, will likely inspire them to respond in kind.

However, if an employee comes to the conclusion that his or her manager is indeed completely disinterested in helping them find fulfillment in their work, it may well be time to start looking for a new job.

Q: Why do so many professional athletes and entertainers seem miserable in their jobs?

A:In spite of the money they make and the attention they receive from fans and the media, many athletes and entertainers experience one or all of the three signs of a miserable job.

Most professional athletes feel anonymous in their jobs because their coaches and managers dedicate little, if any, time or energy getting to know them personally. I’ve had coaches tell me "Hey, these guys are professionals and this is a business. They don’t need anything special from me." Keep in mind that they are referring to young men in their early twenties who are living on their own for the first time and feel surprisingly alone--even with all thefan attention.

Entertainers are in similar situations, but for them, it is often relevance that suffers. Many actors cannot reconcile their celebrity and wealth with the fact that they see their work as being somewhat unimportant, in terms of impacting the lives of others. Perhaps that’s why so many of them get involved in charitable causes or politics--it gives them a sense of purpose.

(Big Fan of Lencioni - But . . .)
『I have read a number of Lencioni's previous books and found them to be insightful and extremely helpful. In particular, the "Five Dysfunctions of a Team" is very powerful and highly recommended. However, "The 3 Big Questions" was painful to listen to. And maybe that is the issue - I rarely have time to read books, so I 'read' most books by listening to them on CD while driving. It didn't take long to conclude that the reader's voice was grating, and I'm sure it didn't help that a male voice tries to impersonate a female voice (with little success). In addition, the dialogue between the characters did not flow well compared to previous Lencioni efforts. (I listened to "Five Dysfunctions of a Team" so clearly it isn't the fable-type format that doesn't play well on CD.) In short, the book was hard to follow (as in unnecessarily convoluted), and very slow to develop. As one might predict, given that I chose to buy the book (CD), I have a hectic and sometimes chaotic home life and was very much looking forward to hearing what Lencioni had to say - nevertheless I nearly stopped listening to the CD multiple times and had to force myself to finish it. If you're like me and listen to many/most of the books you read - do yourself a favor and don't attempt to listen to this one! Sorry Patrick!』

(Applying business concepts to the family sensibly)
『First, I think Patrick Lencioni's books are somewhat unique. The books, from The Five Temptations of a CEO right on through to The 3 Big Questions for a Frantic Family, all use the tool of a story to get the message across. This style, alone, does not make them unique. The fact that the author gives you a 20-40 page non-fiction book at the end of the fable does indeed make them different.

Some people like the "lesson as story" type of books and others like the "lesson as fact" type of books. This book uses both methods. The first 168 pages tell the story of a family moving from chaos to focus using the 3 Big Questions. The next 52 pages present the same information in a non-fiction style. The author calls this latter section the Model in his various books.

Now for the specifics of The 3 Big Questions. The story of the Cousins family helps you see why all of the "extras" that are usually used in business strategy are removed from the 3 Big Questions model. This benefit is very important if you've read a lot of business books. If you jump straight to the Model at the end of the book, you're likely to find yourself asking why this or that is not included - as I did. When I went back to the beginning and read the story, I could see clearly.

Overall, the book presents a simple model that can be employed in an initial 30-90 minute meeting with the family or just the parents. After that, between 10 and 20 minutes per week is all that's needed to keep things moving along in a focused manner. I've read it myself and greatly enjoyed it. Now, my wife and I will read it together and see how we can adjust our current family model based on the new insights it provides.

To the author: excellent work here!』

(Worthwhile for families on the go)
『As a relationship coach, I am thrilled that Lencioni has applied his talents to the family arena. As always, the book can be read in one sitting, offers an approach that is easy to apply and makes sense. If your relationship with your spouse is basically strong this will be a welcome tool to reconnect you and create some sanity. It is also a good diagnostic. If you struggle with answering the first question, that is a good sign that your marriage may need some external support.』

(Use these questions to guide important decisions - like your career direction!)
『Running a family can be even more challenging than running a successful business. In `The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family', Lencioni takes proven business skills and applies them to running a family.

This is another of Lencioni's fables, which tells the story of Theresa, a stay at home mom, and Jude, a freelance business consultant. Theresa borrows her husband's business know-how to organize their frantic family as well seeks to find a balance between business and family life.

Lencioni uses three big questions to target what is most important about running a family while keeping it in balance with having a successful career. These questions are useful to those of us seeking to make changes in our lives - particularly vocational changes.

When seeking a new career, it is important to consider how it will fit in with your family life, and the three big questions should be asked by every job seeker. I recommend this book as a great starting point for anyone seeking to make changes in their family and working lives.

(Excellent book for SCBCD .... and SCEA too !!)
『I can say only one thing: This book is really excellent !!

I wanted to upgrade my SCBCD certification to EJB3 but I did not know which book I should read..so, after reading some good and bad reviews about the book.

I gave it a try..and I started reading. Finding out that it's easy to understand, easy to follow and I would say that it does not matter if you are a beginner or advance in EJB programming.

This book really helps you to understand, it guides you in every chapter. I gave the book to my brother so he may learn EJB and get the certification soon. He is beginner in EJB and he has told me good things about the book.

I did read it twice for my certification, except some chapters that are not part of the exam. For example Spring and EJB but I'll give a try later ;)

Definitely I recommend it...

For those who are interested in SCEA certification...this book is also a GOOD option.

(Too many comparisons of EJB2 make this book boring.)
『This is a good book in general. Yet the author spent too many pages comparing EJB 2 and EJB 3 and keep telling people why EJB 2 is so bad. Such complaints about EJB 2 makes a quite large part of the first part of the book, which is too boring for people not coming from the EJB 2 world. Maybe "From EJB2 to EJB3" is a better title for the book.』

(A book for those who want to get fast up with EJB 3)
『I recently got this book to speed up with EJB3 instead of reading all the JavaEE specs and making the wrong assumptions. This books takes you on a fantastic JavaEE journey and makes you able to play with JavaEE after the end of that journey.』

(Fantastic introduction to EJB 3 technology)
『It's a fantastic introduction to EJB 3. There is a lot of content about JPA, mainly. If you will be starting with EJB 3, this book is really interesting.

I passed on SCBCD after I read this book (and EJB 3 spec).』

(Great book, must have it)
『I don't like to read very long reviews, so for people like me, here it goes: if you are new to EJB and want to learn it, definitely buy this book, it's great stuff. If you are looking for SCBCD5 preparation materials, this is the first thing you should look into, unless you are an experienced EJB developer just going for the cert. After reading this, grab the EJB 3.0 specs - you will be able to understand the concepts, the descriptions, basically everything you need to know.

Now the longer one in case you want more information.

The book is very reader friendly, the writing style is light enough to concentrate for long, but very informative nontheless. This is the book you should read when you are an EJB 3.0 greenhorn, it leads you from basic concepts to good knowledge of the topic (EJB core and JPA, additinally mentioning other Java EE elements like connectors and web modules), with easily uderstandable and short examples along the way. Pretty good introduction to JMS if the reader is not familiar with it is also a big plus for me. Also, the book uses Java 5 features (just as EJB 3.0 do), and if the reader is not familiar with them, there is a short introduction, and the code throughout the book uses it (enums, foreach loops...), which is nice.

I have read a few EJB books, and this one has some unique features - many chapters are summarized with best practices, a short discussion of pros and cons of the approaches shown. Also, very good chapters on EJB 3.0 to EJB 2.1 (and earlier) migration / integration (both ways, i.e. how to use EJB 3.0 in a EJB 2.1 application and vice versa), and a whole chapter dedicated to comparing EJB with Spring, explaining how the two can cooperate and ways to integrate them (versions of Spring discussed are 1.2 and 2.0). At the end, in the appendices, the user can find all deployement descriptor's reference (ejb-jar.xml, persistence.xml and mappings), which is much more edible than reading their respective XSDs. Also, I liked the part on packaging and class-loaders, which gives you some insight into how application servers usually handle this, and how to use it in case of a multi-module application (for instance, how to package everything so that your web module can see and use your entities and your ejbs).

If the user has further questions to ask, or any doubts, they can visit the authors online forum (with the outhors actively contributing to discussions). If this not enough, Javaranch forums are also very helpful, and Reza Rahman (one of the authors) visits it very often. The opportunity to talk to the authors is a good thing, and makes you feel the technology is not that hard to learn - they are real people, after all ;-0

What I didn't like was something a few Amazon reviews pointed out already - telling what we will learn next, and in the next section, repeating what we have just learned. That's the only thing, and it's not a big issue.

All in all, I value this book very much, and it is a fairly earned 5-star review.』

『EJB 3 is the most important innovation introduced in Java EE 5.0. EJB 3 promises to simplify enterprise development, abandoning the heavyweight EJB 2.x model in favor of a lightweight POJO framework. The API represents a lot of hard work, honest introspection, and a fresh perspective on EJB, all without sacrificing the mission of enabling business application developers to create robust, scalable, standards-based solutions.

In the tradition of Manning's In Action series, this book tackles the subject matter head-on, through numerous code samples, real-life scenarios, and illustrations. It is geared toward helping you learn EJB 3 quickly and easily. The authors make the subject matter approachable, covering the basics where needed as well as providing guidance, deep coverage, and best practices. The book highlights what EJB 3 has to offer without disregarding the contributions and strengths of seminal technologies like Spring, Hibernate or TopLink.

What's Inside

* Building Business Logic with POJO Session Beans and Message Driven Beans

* EJB 3 Dependency Injection and Interceptors

* Domain Modeling and Object-Relational Mapping with the EJB 3 Java Persistence API

* Effectively manipulating and retrieving entities, including using the Java Persistence Query Language

* Using EJB 3 from other tiers (such as the web or application client tier) and frameworks such as Spring

* Best practices, performance tuning, and design patterns

* Migrating from EJB 2.x and other POJO frameworks

(Practical for Secondary Teachers)
『This book was worth the money. It is appropriate for secondary teachers (and many things out there are geared more toward elementary). It has a brief introduction to the theory behind the text in the beginning and then the rest is pratctical, skill-based lessons/activites for English Language Learners. As a language arts teacher, my only minor disappointment was that some of the lessons are geared more toward general content areas like social studies and science, but there is still plenty of good stuff for me to use.』

The third edition ofFifty Strategies for Teaching English Language Learnersincludes a rich assortment of practical features to support teachers as they meet some of the more daunting challenges of the 21st century classroom.  All of the strategies in this book are aligned to the TESOL standards and have been field-tested in diverse classrooms.  Each strategy includes a brief explanation, step-by-step instructions in how to plan and usethe strategy and two classroom scenarios demonstrating how the strategy can be adapted for different grade levels and content areas.  A new unique DVD included in the back of the text illustrates select strategies being used in a classroom dominated by English learners.  After the demonstration lesson, one of the authors interviews the teacher for insights into how the lesson was planned and the teacher's reasons for choosing the strategy.  The strategies include planning approaches, strategies for improving student involvement, vocabulary knowledge, and comprehension..Organized into five sections which flow easily from theory and planning, through learner involvement and vocabulary building, to increasing comprehension. Numerous strategies in the theoretical overview section, plus suggestions for assessment integrated into many strategies in other sections. Provides a repertoire of non-traditional assessment ideas such as anecdotal records, performance samples, and portfolios. Integrates material on the use of educational technology such as the internet, visual aids, etc. Includes thorough, concise summary of relevant research from Krashen, Cummins, Terrell, Swain, Asher, and others. For Educators.

(Unbiased to me)
『I agree that the book is rather useful and very practical. However, POLITICS IS A PART OF THIS FIELD. like it or not. and when facts are stated that some politician did or did not do something related to the environment, all of a sudden the authors become POLITICALLY BIASED. which is wrong and that is exactly what this book is trying to make u understand. DON'T JUST TRUST THE MEDIA for scientific facts, MEDIA IS POLITICIZED as well. true facts are available elsewhere, and this textbook does a rather good job in providing the facts.

I got nothing personal to "pick" with the 1st reviewer or Mr.Bush. But I do dislike the type of misinformation and the logical fallacies used in the 1st review. [no offense, there is at least one logical fallacy in your review, go figure]

All I know, is that nobody is perfect and Bush was not a saint by any means. He indeed made mistakes; who's to say he did not make mistakes. On this virtue, who is to say that maybe some of his decisions regarding environment were not mistakes? Only true source I can trust are the scientists, and hands down republican and democrat environmental scientists (and NOT environmentalists-the activists) agree on the implications of mr.Bush's decisions. Of course Kyoto had it's own issues, but that does not exempt mr.Bush and his decisions from judgment and the judgment is not based on the political side of his actions which was basically that I do not sign this protocol since i find other countries not singing it (fair enough) but rather his lack of attentiveness and providing ANY real, researched and acceptable alternatives and thus letting the issue limbo which amounts to INACTION which is very much open to a fair scientific criticism when u look at the global implications.

After all, I think people should side with science when it opposes their politics, because politics come and go and get buried in history, however environmental/scientific facts&effects can last many many years and affect far more than the political constituency who gets offended.

POLAR BEARS are officially on the brink of extinction, GLOBAL WARMING is now a scientifically proven phenomena and no matter what your political figures dictate to you, they are no stronger and more truthful than mother nature. Most reputed scientists do a good job to stay unbiased and I believe the authors have remained quite unbiased, except that negative facts against some ppl are considered bias to their groupies...

u give a 1 star out of 5 to an almost excellent textbook, only because u r politically quite intolerant, now I believe that's one major BIAS right there: TO RUIN the whole thing, for seemingly just 1 problem.

the book is over 600 pages, and u repeatedly pick on page 77 and only based on that u give it 1/5 stars. that's so much for fairness and even if they were biased as u think, it still would not do justice to give them only 1 star, after all you're only in disagreement over 1 single page.

reading through your review, I think you may truly benefit from a business ethics course my friend. after all, democrats are correct about certain things at times, just like how republicans are correct about some other things. If I sat in my economics class and thought "gosh this is just some right wing proud corporate-America/capitalist propaganda", I would have never been able to live my life with a relaxed mind!

(Environment -The Science Behind the Stories)
『Overall this is a superior and very effective textbook for teaching (compare to Raven et al, Botkin and Keller). One BIG criticism that limits or diminishes the text overall however is that Withgott and Brennan are unabashedly politically partisan throughout the text. For example, page 77, in the section entitled , "Science can be politicized" , Withgott and Brennan use the opportunity to go after the Bush administration. The impression is clearly left that the Republican party is the enemy of science and that Democrats are the friends of science. Fairness would dictate a more balanced approach to this section, especially now that we have a bicameral Democrat government with a Democrat executive; are students to believe now that science will not be politicized? Are students to believe that the Union of Concerned Scientists does not politicize science? UCS practice of flying scientists to Washington and then giving them detailed talking points and coaching prior to shuttling them to a meeting with their Senator is not being political? What about the political agenda from the left? Did the NASA scientist quoted on page 77 not have a political agenda as well? Check out [..[............] .. to judge this for yourselves.
The book contains many many more of these types of political bias. Reading through Chapters 18 and 19 is like reading through the Democrat parties talking points. Are we to assume ,as Withgott and Brennan suggest, on page 542 that the Democrat majority Congress is the best friend of the environment? I feel these types of political commentary throughout the text do no service for the causes of environmental activists like Withgott and Brennan. Partisan attacks throughout the book only diminish the work of scientists because they are then associated with these attacks. I think Withgott's background as a San Francisco based journalist clearly has framed his approach.
Again, overall, the book is very very well done. I like this text and would recommend it over any of the others I have seen for an Intro Env Sci course; but, I only wish the authors had left out their own political bias. This would have strengthened the book greatly!』

(Explaining the Journey to Empowerment)
『After reading and being intrigued by the authors' previous book, "Empowerment Takes More Than a Minute," I was curious about this follow-up book. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book was written as a complementary "stand-alone" book with a much different style than its predecessor.

Unlike Blanchard's usual simple, entertaining, and fun-to-read story-telling books, this book was a detailed, practical, common-sense guideline for individuals and organizations on their journeys from hierarchy to empowerment. Besides the credible factual and objective analysis of becoming empowered, this book confirmed for me what I always suspected about Blanchard's usual powerful parables: they are backed up by extensive research, knowledge, and experience.

This book starts with a great, concise overview of "Empowerment Takes More Than a Minute," and then moves on to common, expected questions with practical, executable answers designed to assist people and organizations going through the journey from hierarchy to empowerment. The book concludes with an outstanding detailed empowerment action plan that captures the essence of how the 3 keys to empowerment (share information with everyone, create autonomy through boundaries, and let teams become the hierarchy) can and should be applied simultaneously through the 3 stages of change (starting and orienting the journey, change and discouragement, and adopting and refining empowerment).

Designed as a guidebook, I can easily see the book being used by leaders at all levels who must deal with and implement empowering, or other major changes in their organizations. As is the case with all guidebooks, the information in this book requires the readers' judgment in applying it to the realities of their situations. If viewed as a guaranteed checklist for success by people and organizations that want a quick fix with little thought, this book will likely fall short of expectations. If viewed as a practical, common-sense packed reference, I believe this book will be an invaluable leadership tool for long-term effectiveness and efficiency.』

(Insightful!)
『The 3 Keys to Empowerment revisits the three keys discussed in another Blanchard book, Empowerment Takes More Than a Minute. These three keys are: share information with everyone, create autonomy through boundaries and let teams become the hierarchy. They should be applied to each of the three stages of moving toward empowerment. Many of the actions suggested for the initial stage: "Starting and Orienting the Journey," are repeated in the discussions of the other stages, "Change and Discouragement" and "Adopting and Refining Empowerment." The authors say some areas need repeated focus so readers can implement change. Unfortunately, this is repetitive.

The book's most useful feature is the Empowerment Action Plan, a clear, easy to follow list of specific actions leaders can take at each stage of the journey to empowerment. The 3 Keys is written for CEOs and senior executives.』

(A roadmap to the Land of Empowerment)
『Ken Blanchard, John Carlos, and I wrote this book as a follow up to our best selling Empowerment Takes More Than A Minute. This book is designed to help any manager or team leader or company president who wants to release the power of people for astonishing results. We know that empowerment is often viewed as a buzzword, but we also know that it works for those who stick with it. We think this book can help team leaders and team members know what to do to keep moving forward. Let us know what you think and ask us any questions you have -- we will respond.』
『“Empowerment” can be a mind-numbing topic, but in The 3 Keys to Empowerment, Ken Blanchard and his coauthors use concrete examples, a Q&A format, case histories, and entertaining sidebars to keep the discussion lively. The first“key” is information, which the authors say managers must share liberally with employees to help create a sense of ownership. Next is setting up understandable boundaries that will make employees feel both comfortable and challenged. Finally, managers must develop teams to replace the old hierarchical structure. Armed with this new model of empowerment, companies can navigate the demanding world of global competition.』
『"Empowerment" is one of those business-management buzzwords that generate either excitement or disinterest. Blanchard, Carlos, and Randolph fall into the former category, but they do seem to sympathize with those whose eyes glaze over. Following up their 1996 management book,Empowerment Takes More Than a Minute,The 3 Keys to Empowerment, explains the concrete steps managers can take to empower their employees fully. It starts with information, which managers should share in massive quantities with employees at the start of the empowerment process. The second step is setting up parameters that everyone understands: what employees can and should do, and what actions and decisions will continue to be made by senior management. The third is to develop teams for eventually replacing the old hierarchical structure.

All of this takes time, and the authors point out that team members go up steep learning curves, starting out highly motivated but lacking competence, and quickly lose motivation when they realize how difficult the transition is going to be. Competence and motivation eventually rise, but managers still need to manage differently at each stage of the employees' development. None of this is particularly intuitive, and none of it happens fast. But the rewards, the authors say, include more tuned-in employees, less turnover, and, ultimately, a wealth of brainpower at the company's disposal.--Lou Schuler

『This was a tedious read. I could not get into it at all.

(Inspirational and Timely: A Must Read True Story)
『Talk about current events and the on-going concerns about terrorism, Islam and the Middle East! This book filled in so many unanswered questions for me and brought to light once again the essential oneness and sameness that all humanity shares and how necessarily vital it is to approach the attainment of peace at the grass root level.

To say that Dr.Greg Mortenson is an extraordinary man is an understatement. His passion to promote peace through education of the impoverished Pakistani and Afghanistani children, especially the girls, is reminiscent of the same humanitarian spirit that motivated Mother Theresa's dedication.

Focused on the years since 1993, this story is a true account of his life: mountain climbing in the Karakoram mountains of Pakistan, fundraising for his vision, building schools under the harshest of conditions, bonding with the local tribesmen, enduring life-threatening situations, and total commitment to the the burning cause that ignited action to accomplish his goal. I believe he is succeeding.

I also believe, if you read this book thoroughly and digest its contents, you will be reminded of this adventurous account every time you hear the news of events concerning that part of the world. You will understand more deeply what is needed within the hearts of men to achieve peace. You will begin to lend your conscious support to the peoples of these regions. You will be uplifted to know about Dr. Greg Mortenson, his journey, and his accomplishments. You will be inspired.』

(For anyone that cares about children; ours and the world's....)
『This is the first review I have ever written on Amazon; though I am a voracious reader and have many books that I love, this is the first that has inspired me to such a degree. Three Cups of Tea was a remarkable book....though the beginning was slow for me, with the technical aspects of climbing, the book as a whole was a gift and should be read far and wide. With small children myself, I am extremely interested in education and the impact it can have on a child's life. Greg Mortensen's commitment to bringing education to children that are so very deserving motivates me to do more for not just my children and our community, but for those of communities in far and distant lands. If the stories herein of helping someone else's child do not move you (which I would be surprised if they did not), think about how Mortensen's work may very well make the world a safer and better place for your own children. READ THIS BOOK and let's all support Mortensen and his family in their tireless and selfless commitment to education.』

(Obedience to your Heart Song)
『Above all this inspirational story tells of one mans obedience to his HeartSong;- the unique path one must travel to allow ones heart to sing fully and freely and follow wherever it may take you. Paulo Coelho described it as one's 'Personal Legend.'
This is the story of Greg Mortenson's amazing journey to build schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Also have to admire the courageous and generous spirit of Greg's wife, Tara Bishop, whose Heart Song may also be heard loud and clear in this remarkable story. Extraordinary!!!!
Loved this book and strongly recommend it, especially as I am a teacher and also believe education is the best way to promote peace in this world and acknowledge that we are all brothers and sisters in this big human family.

(Three Cups of Tea)
『A great story and a must read for most anyone desiring a closer look at this part of our world, its people and their lives, and particularly the education system. It puts things in such a remarkable perspective compared to what we as Americans have and often under appreciate, but this is not a sermon, it is the heroic journey of a man who gave up almost everything along the way to break down barriers for women and kids.』
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban’s backyard

Anyone who despairs of the individual’s power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan’s treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools—especially for girls—that offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson’s quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans,Three Cups of Teacombines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.』
