It's a ripping yarn with full-blooded characters, sometimes crudely written, but always engaging. It follows the fate of the Polish Jews from the 1939 invasion of their homeland by Germany until their last defiant and tragic stand in the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto. About 700 Jewish fighters, men and women, half-starved and poorly armed, took on 8,000 crack SS and Wehrmacht troops, bolstered by rabid antisemites recruited from Lithuania and Ukraine and gave them a drubbing. The Germans had to blow up the Ghetto building by buildng and use poisonous gas to murder the Jews. Some escaped through the sewers and managed to join partisan groups. Despite the incredible odds, the Jewish fighters held out for nearly a month, twice as long as the Polish army itself. From this heroic stand sprang the seeds of the new, militant state of Israel as well as Israel's determination to fight alone, knowing as the Ghetto Jews did that nobody else will defend them. I'm keen to read more of Uris' books now. He's a great storyteller, but in this instance he has a story of almost unbelievable courage to work from.』
(Maybe the best and heavist book I ever read..) 『A GREAT READ, A MUST READ, A DIFFICULT READ. I HAD TO PUT THE BOOK down 3 TIMES ON MY COMMUTE WITH TEARS IN MY EYES. This book will give me some of strongest and most lasting memories, and I have read a lot on the holocaust. This time you can really feel for the characters and their plight. Mila 18 can make you hate and runs the gammet on emotions.
It is important and we have all heard it before that we never forget, so that we never repeat. But history repeates itself over and over again. similar situations are going on in 1999, just not as obvious.
AS THE NEW YORK TIMES SAYS ON THE BACK COVER "A VERY IMPORTANT BOOK."』
(Another Great Uris Epic!) 『Uris delivers another stunning historical fiction epic in Mila 18, which accounts the struggle of Polish Jews in the ghetto of Nazi occupied Warsaw. As usual, the fictional characters are extremely well developed and the story is emotional. From the initial German invasion of Poland to the rebellion of the Jews during the final liquidation of the ghetto, Uris delivered and action-filled and poignant narrative of courage and sacrifice. While heartbreaking at times, it was also very inspiring to see the Jews defy the Nazis regardless of the repercussions. Survival of their heritage was paramount despite being outnumbered and brutally treated. This powerful narrative is a testament to Uris's incredible writing skills and a great supplement to QBVII.』
(T. Martin) 『great book...bought this for my aunt who read it 30 years ago and was looking for it for her grand daughter....it made such an impression on her that she wanted her grand daughter to read it too....』
(Inspiring) 『This is a great fictional account of the Warsaw uprising during Nazi Occupation of Poland. I found it to be very educational regarding Jewish history and very inspirational. It is a story of courage in the face of grave danger. It took me a little while to read this book. As I read it, I knew there would be no happy endings however, it was great to witness how a small band of fighters kept the German army at bay. Uris created great characters both evil and good in this book. Recommend.』 『It was a time of crisis, a time of tragedy--and a time of transcendent courage and determination. Leon Uris's blazing novel is set in the midst of the ghetto uprising that defied Nazi tyranny, as the Jews of Warsaw boldly met Wehrmacht tanks with homemade weapons and bare fists. Here, painted on a canvas as broad as its subject matter, is the compelling of one of the most heroic strugglesof modern times.』

I loved the writer's sensitive and rich characters, and chilling/brilliant story line. I wished the story would go on and I am thrilled to learn there are 2 sequals, can't wait to read them. A note to Hollywood: Make a movie or TV show, Sandra Bullock would make a mean Sherry :-)』
(Solid and interesting (if not fully achieved) first attempt (3.3 stars)) 『This is a good novel for a first-time published writer. The premise is enjoyable, if like me, you enjoy the added element of a realistically portrayed super-natural power in pursuit of evil.
However, my expectations were a bit higher based upon the great reviews and Stephen King's testimonial than I thought the book delivered upon. I might have felt differently if I wasn't consistently comparing this to Through Violet Eyeswhich was, in my opinion, just more original and well-written. It's another book with a supernaturally gifted (and, of course exquisitely beautiful and smart) heroine and truly evil foe.
But, this one was a bit confusing in that multiple characters complete with back stories are added in every few pages - and they often prove to be irrelevant and just on-going distractions to the tale. It also seemed, the author couldn't quite decide who to make the main protaganist - the supernaturally gifted Sherry or the over-achieving strong, but vulnerable detective. In the end, the sheer number of characters overwhelmed the tale and made it hard to believe as well in any of them.
BOTTOM LINE: If you like strong woman protaganists, a really evil villian and a different supernatural sort of twist- you'll probably enjoy this one. But, don't expect it to be one of your best reads. (And I'd still recommend one of Woodworth's novels instead.). Still, I look forward to seeing how this author grows.』
(Thoroughly Enjoyed and Now Looking Forward to Last Breath!) 『I bought Last Breath before 18 Seconds but wanted to read the first Sherry Moore book before it. So I purchased this one and I am very thankful that I purchased Last Breath. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters in 18 Seconds and I am most looking forward to more of Sherry Moore. I was a little disappointed in the lack of her presence but knowing there are 2 more Sherry Moore novels, I pushed that aside. I will say, the character of Dillon was unnecessary. Just didn't see a point to him.
Overall, I highly recommend George Shuman.

(Great book) 『I initally read the third book in the series, but I had to go back and read the others too.
Sherry Moorre is a blind lady who can see the last 18 seconds of a dead person's life. She has proven useful in finding murderers and other pieces of valuable information. She says she is not a psychic. She had a near death experience and she believes it has to to with the electrical after images that she receives when she holds their hands.
The stories are enhanced with the problems that Sherrie has because of her blindness. But she is not weakling, she knows martial arts and can defend herself handily.
The stories flow quickly and the books are quick reads. Having said that, the author creates characters that are endearing (or horrendous) and you get involved with and care about them.
I am looking foward to the next book.』
(Last thoughts) 『Sherry Moore is a blind woman who has a special talent. She is able to touch the deceased and view the last 18 seconds of their thoughts and memories. She was abandoned as a small child and was raised in an orphanage. She always dreamed of being someone important someday, and now she is, but not in the way she had hoped. She is called upon by police lieutenant Kelly O'Shaughnessy from Wildwood, New Jersey to come solve a murder and finds herself a target.
This was not your typical psychic novel where someone closes their eyes and they can see everything that happened, what the killer looked like, their house address, license plate number, and what color underwear they had on!!! This was a story that wasn't all that unbelievable. While she is able to see what the dying person was thinking the last 18 seconds of their life, she is left trying to filter through the thoughts and make sense of them. Sometimes what the dying person was thinking was something that happened in their distant past. Others saw the faces of their killers. Sometimes she's able to help and other times what she sees never gets figured out.
The story has a lot of depth, and is an easy read. There is enough action and suspense to satisfy everyone. I highly recommend this book.』 『In his gripping debut, George D. Shuman crafts a pulse-pounding, tension-filled thriller about two brave women -- one with uncanny psychic abilities -- who unite to catch a murderous madman...before he finds them first.
Thirty years after a deadly traffic accident landed Earl Sykes in prison, he is back on the streets of Wildwood, New Jersey -- and back for revenge. He is also feeding his perverse appetite for abducting young female victims -- the same crimes he committed years ago for which he was never caught.
Police lieutenant Kelly O'Shaughnessy is bewildered by the disappearance of several young women from the boardwalk -- crimes horrifyingly reminiscent of unsolved cases from the seventies. Reluctant to ask for help but desperate to stem the bloodshed, Kelly enlists investigative consultant Sherry Moore. Blind and beautiful, Sherry has the extraordinary ability to "see" the deceased's last eighteen seconds of memory by touching the corpse. As they join forces to discover the killer's identity, the women unwittingly become the hunted -- each step drawing them closer to the deadly clutches of a homicidal monster.
IPhone 3G used's review (Nancy Drew Book #18) 『I bought this book for my niece for her B-Day! She loves Nancy Drew books!! She said this book was pretty good but not as good as some of the other ones she has read. She still enjoyed it none the less!』
(Nancy Drew Mystery Stories) 『The book was shipped quickly and was received in excellent condition.』
(True to original version and satisfying (with cautions).) 『My 9-year-old niece is an avid Nancy Drew fan and enjoyed this entry in the series so I bow to her opinion. Here are a few comments from my reading:
- This edition is faithful to the original story from the Forties (clearly stated up front) and contains a few racial references and stereotypes that make one cringe nowadays.
- The plot seems a bit intricate and complicated for young readers.
- If you're sensitive to violence, be aware that there is a shooting involved (but I suppose that's true in many of these mysteries).
Other than that, my niece and I both found the book satisfying, and I imagine it's typical of the early Nancy Drew entries.』
(Nancy Drew excels again!) 『This reprint of the original is delightful as Nancy Drew always. There is a lot of heart-pounding action in this mystery as Nancy Drew has some narrow escapes with burning planes and exotic animals.』
(The Moss Covered Mansion) 『The Nancy Drew Collection is incredible! As a collector, I enjoy each of the stories. I love the older originals in particular. They contain more substance and much better writing. I feel the newer ones read like comic books. The older ones challenge us at times to pick up a dictionary. Also, these now make great history books as we read about chains that were put on the tires after a rain because most the roads were dirt. We read of a time of typewriters, telegraphs, telephones (no cellphones)and in the earlier ones no mention of television! Some people are offended because of the so called racial slurs. I don't see anything racial about it. This is our history and these kind of folks did and still do exist whether you are speaking about how black folks speak or folks from lower class neighborhoods may behave. These books are true to what is real. There are crooks in poor neighborhoods! And how many poor but good folks has Nancy helped? Black folks often did service jobs. My own mother had a black cleaning lady. I see nothing wrong with that. Any person regardless of color or race can be anything they choose to be in America. Nancy is just real (outside of the fact that her heroistic feats may be a bit more than the average girl could attaint to). We can not condemn her for being born with a silver spoon. We can certainly learn from her as she was brought up to work hard and respect others despite her wealth; and she even attends church on Sunday! Nancy is the empitomy of good values and love for others. I hope Nancy is around for many, many more years for young people to enjoy. I grew up with Nancy and as a collector, she is still my best girl.』 『Nancy Drew sets out to prove that her father's client was unjustly accused of trying to sabotage the United States space program.』

IPhone 3G used's review (This Is My Favorite Hardy Boy Book) 『I remember reading this book 5 years ago... and boy I loved this book. It was the quickest Hardy Boy book I have ever finished. Very suspenseful and a very exciting ending. If your a hardy boy fan... your not one without this book :)』
(Museum Mystery) 『This Hardy Boys book is more interesting than the previous two books in this series. However, the flavor is that of a 1930s story.
Someone is stealing artifacts from various museums and collections around the country. Each of the thefts involves specific items featuring a twisted claw. Fenton, Frank and Joe Hardy are soon in pursuit of a sophisticated gang of criminals who plot their thefts with great care, and transport their stolen goods with even greater care.
The boys soon find themselves on board a ship that is somehow involved in the thefts. In an even more bizarre twist, the boys find themselves on an island that appears to be the heart of some kind of strange criminal kingdom.
During their journeys the Hardy boys find themselves in danger numerous times, with death just inches away. Through a combination of audacious luck and skill the Hardy boys survive kidnapping and plane problems to stay on the chase, with an ending that may not be possible in the world today.
Though the Hardy Boys series is written in a relatively archaic fashion, as reading material for an increasingly younger audience they are excellent. The stories were once recommended for children ages 10 to 14. As children are exposed to more violence and seem to require greater levels of stimulation, the recommended age range has move to 9 to 12. I think any child capable of reading some of the challenging words in these books will enjoy them, regardless of how tame most of the action may be. Once a child has reached age 12 or so the stories may be of less interest, but given the combination of mystery and action, these books remain good safe choices for parents who want to know what their children are reading. 』
(Good Book) 『I read a book called the Twisted Claw. It's a fery good book. Frank and Joe Hardy help their dad track down a gang of smugglers, and discover a secret island kingdom. This book was great, lots of mystery.』
(Good Book) 『I read a book called the Twisted Claw. It's a fery good book. Frank and Joe Hardy help their dad track down a gang of smugglers, and discover a secret island kingdom. This book was great, lots of mystery.』
(Similar To The Original) 『This review concerns the revised 1969 edition. Frank and Joe help their father with his case concerning the thefts of pieces from a pirate treasure that had been on display in various museums. The investigation leads Frank and Joe to a mysterious ship called The Black Parrot. This is a very good book; although, I preferred the original edition. I thought that the best part of both books was when Frank and Joe disguise themselves and sail aboard The Black Parrot. Unfortunately, in the revised edition it lasts for only about 25 pages, while in the original version, that part lasted for a number of chapters. The revised edition is an exciting book and I think that most fans of the series would enjoy it.』 『Number 18 in the Applewood Books's reprints of the Original Hardy Boys series-Just as You Remember Them!』

Usually ships in 24 hours IPhone 3G used's review (Terrific "Historical" Mystery/Suspense/Spy Drama) 『This books takes place in real time (during the infamous Profumo Scandal in Great Britain), using a created character to guide the reader through the events. It's very shrewdly constructed and very believable. Frewin gets under the skin of the characters and makes the claustrophobic paranoid character of the novel grow and grow and grow. What seems at first like an interesting historical re-creation becomes more of an insider's view of the events -- and a chilling commentary on the power of the gov't to make people and events just disappear. Frewin is an excellent writer who puts you right into the minds of the characters and creates the whole universe they inhabit. A friend recommended the book and i'm glad he did. I've gone on to read other Frewin novels and they're just as good, for different reasons.』
(Porn and Profumo) 『Five years ago, I saw this book in a London bookshop and filed it away in my head as something to check out when I had more money. Last week, after carrying the title around in a notebook for years, I stumbled across a used copy in a local bookshop. I'll step right up and say that, yes, it was worth the effort and the wait. Frewin's debut (he was Stanley Kubrick's PA for many years), is a great, gritty period thriller set amidst early '60s London. The atmosphere oozes off the page in a story which follows a small-time part time pornographer who gets mixed up in the Profumo scandal.
A note of caution here-those not familiar with the Profumo scandal (which is likely to be almost any American reader) would be well advised to do a little reading about it prior to embarking on Frewin's book. The Guardian web site has a decent mini-history of the affair, or at the least, watch the 1989 film Scandal (starring John Hurt and a young Bridget Fonda). The whole sordid episode is presented in Frewin's book, but only through the eyes of the protagonist, and much of the context may be confusing without further grounding.
A further note of caution is order due to the book's structure. Some readers may find confusing or be put off by its framing technique. The book starts with a 40 page section in which a contemporary narrator discovers an old '60s short porn film appended (appropriately enough) to a video of Get Carter. His curiosity over the maker of the "blue" film leads an interview-like series of other people talking about "Tim." Then the bulk of the book slips back in time to follow country lad Tim, as he tries to make it in the big city and the unsavory people he gets mixed up in. The book then ends with a brief further contemporary section. Those who demand their thrillers end neatly, with all loose ends tied up will be especially frustrated by the outcome.
Frewin's prose is direct and lively, capturing the period slang and tone. To a large degree, the story is one about a "secret London" of greasy cafés, small time hoods, West Indian immigrants, wanna-be models, and cover-ups. It's a vibrantly seedy portrait of London's transition from the postwar '50s to the legendary "swinging" '60s. (If the time and place interests you, check out Colin MacInnes' London trilogy of City of Spades, Absolute Beginners, and Mr. Love and Justice) The thriller aspect is a rather perplexing, tied up as it is in Tim's pornographic work and the Profumo scandal, but moves the story along-always with a hint of conspiracy. Good stuff, and I'll definitely be adding Frewin's next two books, "Sixty-Three Closure" and"Scorpion Rising" to my list, although hopefully it won't take me five years to find and read them!』
(London Vice) 『Tim Purdon, pioneering pornographer of London in the early 60's has gotten himself in a whole lot of trouble with forces neither he nor the reader understands. The story intersects with Stephen Ward, the Osteopath and procurer who was made the fall guy for the Profumo scandal that brought down the Tory government. Well written and literate, but bring a dictionary to convert British to American English. The story is as exciting as the pornography is boring. If you like well-defined, pat endings though, stay away. A good read.』 『The chance discovery of a 30-year-old porn film leads back to the film’s maker, Tim Purdom, and the London of the late 50s and early 60s. Purdom was a pioneer of the British blue movie as well as a figure on the periphery of the Profumo sex scandal. He directed eight films—but who was directinghim, and what was their hidden agenda? And where is Tim now? Explicitly and unremittingly,London Blueslimns the underworld of Soho vice and the London demimonde at a time when the gray Fifties were giving way to the "Swinging Sixties." Don't read it if you haven't read Memory Zero; it won't make sense without the first book. Here, Arthur has Sam and Gabriel trying to catch a killer while continuing to delve into the mystery that is Sam's past. Arthur does a great job of writing this sort of futuristic paranormal novel. The plot flows well, the world is well-conceived and imaginative, and the character development continues nicely. This is a worthy follow-up to Memory Zero. However, as with the other books in this series, I'm left wondering why it is so short. Most books in this genre are significantly longer, and I'm convinced Arthur is a good enough author to be able to expand her stories just a tad and still maintain their quality.』

*** On the plus side, a fast pace is set and maintained throughout the intriguing plot. However, though characterization is still good, action took priority over it in this volume of the series. Yet, it is still a good read. ***』
